3 Ways to Recognise the Emotional Needs of Others

workplace learning Jul 20, 2017

Everyone has emotional needs and it is necessary to recognise them when we interact with our co-workers. Here are 3 ways to recognise the emotional needs of others:

1. Identifying emotional cues

Anger, sadness, fear, envy and guilt are some of the emotional cues to look out for when you communicate with others at the workplace. You will need to correctly identify these cues with the types of behaviour and actions demonstrated by the other party.

2. Observing body language

Reading body language teaches you to listen with your eyes as well as your ears. If people are uncomfortable, they will have their arms crossed, body leaning back and eyes darting around. Sometimes, the key is not just about listening to what the other person is saying, but to be aware of how the other person is acting.

3. Recognising physical responses

For instance, a person who is angry may tend to raise his voice and clench his fists. Negative emotions may bring out the worst in people and create tension amongst others working in the same department.
