5 Questions to Consider Before Your Next Career Move

workplace learning Jun 28, 2017

“The grass is greener on the other side”. While many of us may consider changing jobs at one point or another in our career, it is wise to first think about the reasons you are leaving your current job and evaluate if it is a good move to jump ship. Here are 5 questions to consider when deciding your next career move.

These are bad reasons for leaving:

  1. You dislike your boss

“People leave managers, not companies”, yet this could be a bad reason for wanting to leave. No boss is for ever and employees can get promoted or transferred to other departments. The new boss you are excited about working with may move on to bigger projects and your next boss could be a boss from hell.

 2. You are offered a 100 percent pay raise

This is potentially an attractive yet dangerous offer. While no one will complain about the money, there will definitely be a wider job scope and greater responsibilities. There may be a lesser chance of having a good work-life balance as you have to do what it takes to succeed in the new role.

There are good reasons for leaving:

  1. You dread going to work everyday

If your heart sinks at the prospect of going to work everyday, it is a warning sign that you will not advance much in your current job. Move on.

 2. You are stagnant in your current role

Most of us work our way up into a specialist role yet it is easy to get trapped once you are comfortable. You may find yourself doing the same old tasks again and again without any surprises. If this lifestyle suits you, this is fine. But if you are looking for new challenges and inspiration, it may be time to venture out.

 3. You are about to be terminated

It is easier to land a new job when you are still employed. Once you leave your current job, prospective employers may suspect that there is something fishy about your reasons for being unemployed.
