How Do You Give Support in Coaching?

workplace learning Jun 19, 2017

“I never teach my pupils; I only attempt to provide the conditions in which they can learn” - Albert Einstein

Coaching is about creating the conditions necessary for learning and growth. What are some ways that a coach can provide support for their coachees to succeed?

1. Let the coachee know that you are approachable and available

Your coachee needs to know that he can contact you when he needs assistance. Let the coachee know your available timings and what times to avoid so that he will know when you really cannot be interrupted. Make it a point to check in with your coachee such as a quick 5 to 10 minutes phone call or face-to-face meeting at a designated time regularly for a quick debrief.

2. Project yourself as a trusted advisor

Make it clear to your coachee that you are here to help him and he can safely admit to you if he has doubts on what to do or if he is struggling with a task. Sometimes it may take time for your coachee to confide in you before coaching can be truly effective.

3. Guide them in a way that is most effective for your coachee

Everyone has different learning styles, some of us are visual learners while others learn best when they adopt a hands-on approach. No one uses a single learning style and there is usually some overlap. Observe your coachee and combine several styles to see which works best for him or her.
