How to Delegate Work

workplace learning Jun 19, 2017

If delegating can save you time or someone can do it better, that is good. But if you are feeling lazy or it is just a small task, do it yourself. Effective delegation takes time. Here are some tips for how to delegate work:

1. Select the right person

Choose someone who has the relevant skills and motivation to complete the task well. Discuss what needs to be done such as:

-What are the potential issues?

-How will you start the project?

-Who else will be involved?

-Check that they understand what you want by paraphrasing the tasks to you.

2. Set up support mechanisms

A certain level of authority needs to be granted to the employee such as to obtain equipment or access to confidential files. Make sure that the employee is clear on what he can have access to to help him in completing the task. Also, if they are stuck, help them identify who and where he can turn to for resources.

3. Maintain communication

Many managers make the mistake of thinking that they need not be involved once they have delegated the task. Delegation is a learning experience for your employees. Give constructive feedback at regular intervals. Tell them what they are doing well and be specific about what they need to improve on.

 4. Review after the event

If your employee has successfully completed the task, congratulate them on their accomplishment. If they have encountered difficulties in completing the task, clarify with them how they could improve and thus make delegation simpler for them the next time round for both of you.
