How to Help your Employees Cope with Stress

workplace learning Apr 09, 2021

As a manager, your goal in stress management is not to eliminate it but to learn to manage it. Here are some tips:

  1. Make work days satisfying
Take time out to give your employees feedback and provide the information they need to do a good job. Give your employees a sense of control over their work by involving them in decision making. Employees need to feel a sense of purpose when faced with stress so as to propel them to push on.
  2. Recognize their efforts
Consider non-monetary rewards for good performers at work. A simple e-mail blast, time off from work or offering them flexibility to work from home are some perks to make your employees feel valued and to work hard for you.
  3. Adopt an open-door policy
Make yourself accessible to employees so that they can alert you to problems - whether personal or work-related problems. Let your employees know that they have a dependable boss who is always there to support them.
  4. Be observant
Performance will decline if there is a high level of stress at work. Learn to identify employees who are most at risk from stress and look for way to reduce their workload or teach them how to better manage their time. Some companies implement work-life balance initiatives where employees can participate in fitness programs, art workshops during work hours to de-stress.
