How to Maximise Social Media for Networking
Jul 25, 2017Social networking sites are a good way of reaching out, making contact, sharing experiences and offering support for working professionals.
Here are some ways to harness social media for networking:
1. LinkedIn is one of the most popular business networking site. Rather than typing out a detailed resume on your profile, summarise the highlights of your career. List down specifics that differentiates you from others. For instance, replace “A project manager with 8 years of experience” with “I have 8 years of experience in project management with expertise in managing budgets and creating product value for the end users.”
2. Online networking will not happen on its own. You will need to set aside at least 30 mins a week reaching out to your network. It helps if you share your views on industry trends and development and share the projects you are currently working on. Comment on others’ activities and give praise, encouragement or advice when it is appropriate.
3. Testimonials can be a powerful sales tool. Write recommendations for friends and colleagues whose work you admire and they might do the same for you. Doing so not only display your professionalism, but it also gives others a sense of what you do and how you get along with others.
4. Twitter is another social media platform where you can share succinct pieces of information with many people. Because “tweets” are limited in size, they tend to be used for chatter and keeping people connected. You can display your expertise and intelligence by sharing insights about your industry and stating valuable opinions on related matters.
