Networking Tips for Extroverts and Introverts
Jul 24, 2017The majority of us display features from both personality types - extrovert or introvert - but for many, one of the character traits is dominant.
Here are some networking tips for both personality types:
Extroverts:
- Many non-extroverts view extroverts as intimidating with their larger than life personas at events. Hence it is important not to intimidate others at first sight or overstep their limits.
- Be careful not to end up acting like an entertainer rather than a networker. There are times where your extroverted characteristics get in the way of your job competence and positive qualities. Hence it may not be easy for you to establish close contact due to that reason. Many extroverts have extensive networks, but these are usually based on loose relationships.
- Learn to be an active listener. Most extroverts are eager to chip in whenever there is a lull in the conversation, for fear that there is awkward silence. Try to let others talk and do not interrupt when they are in the middle of their speech. While it may seem challenging at first, you will find yourself experiencing a different kind of satisfaction from letting others have attention and space.
Introverts:
- Try pairing yourself up with an extroverted colleague or friend when attending networking events. Let them initiate contact and conversations until you are comfortable to step out on your own.
- Use the power of the Web to connect with relevant people. You can get to know people in advance so that you have conversation starters. Also, you can explore a variety of options with no expense other than your time.
- If you do not feel confident about approaching the workshop speaker or conference host, send them a handwritten note to express your appreciation or email them with your questions as a follow-up.
