1. Think beyond monetary incentives
While it is true that money makes the world go round, employees are not purely motivated by financial rewards in this day and age. They want jobs where they feel trusted, valued and empowered. Therefore, companies need to combine rewards and recognition in building an engaged workforce. More importantly, when both employees and managers are involved in the implementation and design of rewards or recognition, they are committed to making good things happen.
2. Involve your employees
Employees need to feel that they can make a difference and that what they are doing is meaningful. Managers should aim to let employees have input and feedback on decisions that affects their livelihood. Whether it is planning or decision-making, having a vested interest enhances employees’ sense of engagement and belonging.
3. Redefine success
Good managers care about both the product and their employees. When people enjoy their work, they are likely to get a lot more done. Review work processes, career development and job design regularly with your staff. Create targets and formulas that lead to success. When employees have a strong sense of identity and purpose, they are more likely to stay and this goes a long way in contributing to a company’s sustained success.
4. Celebrate success
Regardless of whether it was a small achievement, an employee winning an award or the company landing a big client, make it a reason to celebrate. Every small step paves the way to major success. When employees feel good, they will take pride in their work and continue to perform better.
