What Makes Coaching Effective?

workplace learning Jun 17, 2017

Effective coaching is more of how you do things rather than what you do. It is about the attitude and approach that the manager needs to adopt that will make coaching effective. Here are some attributes of an effective coach.

1. Observant: Be aware of what is happening and what isn’t happening. A good coach needs to pay attention to what your employees are saying and what they are not telling you.

2. Sensitive: Care about how your employees feel and not just about how they do their work.

3. Honest: Be frank about how your employees are faring. Admit it when you are not sure about anything. Be honest with your employees as you expect them to be honest with you.

4. Patient: Allow your employees time to do what they need to do and time to say what they have to say.

5. Respectful: Treat your employees as human beings and not human resources.

6. Positive: Focus on helping your employees develop their potential and not on finding fault or blaming them.

7. Supportive: Ensure that your employees have the necessary resources to do their job such as access to materials, answers to their questions etc.
